Three siblings and a neighbour who were stranded in yesterday’s flood in Kg Padang Empang in Kedah were saved thanks to the fast thinking and bravery of a villager.

Most of the time heroes are really just ordinary people.

In fear that floodwater might enter their home, Mohd Nazrol Ramli, 30, and his three brothers started carrying furniture and other objects to the top level of their home at 6 o’clock in the evening.

“We were still moving the household items when at about 7pm, there was a strong gush of water and it surrounded our house and six others.

“My brothers and I were trapped, as well as a woman in one of the nearby houses. By then, other villagers were shouting for us to leave the house for fear that it would be hit by driftwood and logs carried by the floodwater,” he said when met by reporters yesterday.

Nazrol said that out of concern for their safety, he defied the strong current and swam through the floodwater, which had turned into a river, four times to save his three siblings and their next-door neighbour.
