Man shot in Kajang is the brother of Hulu Langat MIC leader and a Gang 36 lieutenant

The man shot six times while at waiting at a traffic light in Kajang has been positively identified as the younger brother of the Hulu Langat division youth chief of the MIC, and is also the right hand man of a Gang 36 millionaire drug lord.

The victim of the attack, M Thanabalan is the younger brother of M Kalaiarasu, who himself had survived a shooting in 2010.

He is also the lieutenant of the leader of the Gang 36 organisation, a millionaire drug lord known as Devan.

Yesterday, two men on a motorcycle had stopped next to the victim’s Honda Accord at Jalan Reko in Kajang and fired six shots at Thanabalan. The incident took place at 12.30pm.

In 2010, his brother M Kalaiarasu was shot while having drinks at a restaurant on Jalan Raja Harun in Kajang.

“Thanabalan’s name was on the list of gang leaders released by the Home Ministry during Ops Cantas in 2013,” said a source to G Prakash of the Malay Mail

Kalaiarasu’s name is also on the Home Ministry’s list.

Thanabalan is suspected to operate in the upper echelons of Gang 36, and to have been involved in illegal drugs, money laundering, and extortion.

Devan himself fled the country during the beginning of Ops Cantas. His last known location is believed to be Canada.

The hit on Thanabalan, notoriously known as Kajang Balan, is the third such gang-related attack in as many weeks, prompting police to step up its operations against organised crime.

Last Tuesday, a mother and son were shot 10 times in another suspected gang-related attack in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. And on February 16, another Gang 36 member was shot four times in Klang, supposedly by Gang 24 rivals.
