Man in Low Yat phone theft case gets four-month jail term

A jobless man, who was involved in a Low Yat phone theft case last year, was sentenced to four months’ jail and fined RM1,000 in default one month’s jail, reported The Star Online.

23-year-old Shahrul Anuar Abdul Aziz was found guilty of stealing a Lenovo S860 smartphone worth RM800 from a shop in Low Yat Plaza last July.

Shahrul Anuar’s lawyer Shaharudin Ali pleaded for leniency, saying that Shahrul came from a very poor family and his father, who works as a floor sweeper, struggles to make a living.

Shaharudin also added that his client was robbed of his wallet and handphone earlier in the day of the offence.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Malini Anne argued that the offence committed by Shahrul was serious, and he was under the influence of drugs when he committed the offence.

The magistrate granted Shahrul a stay of execution, but ordered the fine to be paid immediately.
