For a few seconds of ‘fun’, a man earned himself a one-day jail term and a RM3,000 fine for flashing his genitals at a college student last month.
According to The New Straits Times, 24-year-old S. Raveendran pleaded guilty to insulting the modesty of a 22-year-old woman when the charge was read out to him at the magistrate’s court.
He admitted to committing the offence in front of an elevator at the Setapak Condominium in Wangsa Maju on June 6 between 1pm and 1.30pm.
Deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Hanim Abd Halim urged for a deterrent sentence, saying that it was a serious offence.
“This kind of case is becoming rampant in our country. The sentence imposed must serve as a lesson to the accused and also the public so that such offences would not be repeated,” she was quoted as saying.
Counsel Ahmad Redza Mohd Nor pleaded for leniency, saying that S. Raveendran, a hotel front desk worker, was supporting his parents and sibling financially.
“He was remanded in the lockup for three days and regrets what he did. He is a young offender and admits that what he did was wrong and that he is sorry for his actions,” Ahmad Redza was quoted as saying.
Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid reportedly ordered the accused to pay the fine, or spend three months behind the bars if he fails to do so.
