Smokers with sticky hands, this should serve as a warning: A Melaka mechanic has been taken to court for possessing nine stolen lighters that he took last month while at a flat. The lighters were allegedly “hot items,” aka stolen goods from the Great Lighter Heist of 2018.

Technically not a thing, but we’re going with that narrative.

Mohd Fitri Mohd Hatta has plead not guilty to stealing the multi-colored, plastic bits of wonder that warrant litigation. The crime was allegedly committed on February 8, 2018 at a residence in Lorong Pandan.

The prosecution told Judge Norma Ismail that the contraband had the KK logo emblazoned, proving that they were stolen from a KK Super Mart convenience store.

We’re not lawyers, but unless those things have serial numbers, doesn’t that just prove that KK marts sell lighters?

Also, in our brief stint as a teen smoker, we’ve probably lost dozens of lighters to sticky-fingered friends – can we litigate for “stolen” private plastic property? What’s the statute of limitations of someone consistently stealing your lighter when they KNEW it was your lighter? I’m looking at you, Lisa.

There you have it. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Just go down to the shop and pay RM2 (US$0.50) for a damn lighter instead of accepting the generous offer from your dodgy mate to take nine of his.

The accused is now facing a jail sentence of up to 20 years, and his bail is set at RM15,000 (US$3,800) over nine plastic lighters, and they’re not even BICs.
