Man dies of heart attack while watching Lee Chong Wei-Lin Dan badminton match

The nail-biting men’s single badminton semi-final match between Malaysian shuttler Lee Chong Wei and arch rival Lin Dan at the Rio Olympic Games proved too much for one man from Ipoh when he collapsed and died while watching the match.

According to The Star Online, 64-year-old man Lum Wah Wong was watching the nerve-wrecking match at his sister’s home in Papan on Friday when the incident happened.

The man’s cousin, Bibi Lam, told the news portal that Wah Wong got too excited when Lee and Lin drew level at 20-20 in the deciding set.

“They were the only ones watching the match in the house. He stood up and shouted. Seconds later, he sat back down, took two breaths of air and fell unconscious,” Lam said yesterday.

“Our niece tried to wake him up. He opened his eyes for a second but slipped back into unconsciousness. When the ambulance came, the personnel checked his pulse and confirmed his passing,” she was quoted by the news portal as saying.

Meanwhile, district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasri Omar confirmed to The New Straits Times that Wah Wong had died of a heart attack, and he had been receiving treatments prior to his passing.
