Man arrested after spending a year impersonating a doctor at Kedah hospital

Lab coat? Check. Stethoscope? Check. Crossed arms of authority? Nailed it.

A man has been arrested after spending over a year impersonating a doctor at Kedah’s Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Health Minister Dr S. Subramaniam is taking the incident very seriously, and the ministry will now review its security procedures.

The smartly dressed man wore a lab coat and had a stethoscope around his neck, but did not have access cards to enter any of the wards. Instead, he would limit himself to public areas of the hospital and “do his rounds” speaking to people.

Although he impersonated a doctor, the Health Ministry is clear to state that he did not perform any duties as a doctor. At the end of the day, the man would go home. He did this for over a full year before anyone caught on.

New Straits Times reports that Subramaniam has said that the man, “would come once a week, but he may have some problem, that’s why he is doing it.”

A detailed medical evaluation if we ever heard one.

After spending the better part of 2016 and 2017 calling himself “Dr Ridzuan,” a senior doctor checked his name against a hospital directory, and realized there was a man practicing at Sultanah Bahiyah.

That’s how easy it is, folks. One person, basically just double checking against a readily available list, and the jig is up.

Shortly after a police report was filed by the hospital, the man was arrested for impersonating a public servant.

He has been sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

Plot twist: will he just go back to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital?
