A lorry driver has been detained and more than RM125,000 (US$30,000) worth of drugs seized from a luxury condo in Penang that housed a drug-processing lab, police said yesterday.

The 31-year-old man was arrested in Sungai Nibong on Sunday afternoon and had packets of heroin and syabu confiscated from him, police said. An interrogation led the police to uncover the luxury condo on Bayan Indah road in Bayan Lepas town, where more drugs were seized. Police did not reveal the name of the condominium, where it said a drug lab had been active in the past three months.

“Upon inspection of the vehicle, the police found a packet containing heroin weighing 505 grams and 15 packets filled with syabu, worth RM11,100 (US$2,600),” Superintendent A. A Anbalagan said at a press conference.

Police said it also seized caffeine, chloroform, and various drug-processing equipment from the condo unit, adding that the lab was also where drugs were packaged and trafficked from.

The lorry driver is said to be a member of a drug syndicate and has been remanded for seven days to assist with police investigation.

“We are looking for other members as well as the mastermind,” Anbalagan said. He also appealed for more information from the public.
