A senior citizen was arrested yesterday for allegedly sharing an image — deemed insulting to Prime Minister Najib Razak — via WhatsApp.
According to a Bernama report, the 76-year-old author was detained at his home in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, Selangor at 12.15pm after a police report was lodged against him.
Johor Police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd was quoted as saying that police seized a Samsung G5 mobile phone belonging to the man. He is expected to be remanded at the magistrate’s court today, Bernama reported.
“The suspect was found to have uploaded the image under the name ‘Pa Ya’ in the WhatApp group ‘Bicara Politik Melayu’ (Talk on Malay politics) aimed at insulting and offending Malaysians,” Wan Ahmad said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If charged, the man faces the possibility of up to one year in jail, fine not more than RM50,000 or both.
