A Malindo Air flight bound to Kuala Terengganu from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang caught fire in mid-flight, forcing it to turn back for an emergency landing in Subang.
In a statement, Malindo Air said the ATR-72-600 twin-engine turboprop aircraft experienced the incident during ascent, at about 7,000 feet.
“The aircraft fire detection system was activated and immediately, the operating crew carried out the emergency checklist as per the standard operating procedure to contain the situation.
“The captain decided to turn back to Subang and the aircraft landed safely in Subang without any further incident and no one was hurt.
“All the passengers were later transferred to another flight to Kuala Terengganu,” said the press statement.
The airline said it was investigating the cause of the fire and that the incident had been reported to the relevant authorities and to the aircraft manufacturer.
The 7.30am flight was carrying the Terengganu state football team back from an away game. Terengganu midfielder Faiz Subri shared the above mobile phone photo of the burning engine via his social network accounts.
