Malaysia’s women’s dodgeball team now ranks number one in the world

Malaysia has had its fair share of world number one title holders in sports: Lee Chong Wei (badminton), Nicol David (squash) and recently, Syakilla Salni Jefry Krisnan (karate).

Guess what? We have a new world number one title holder joining that list!

The Malaysian women’s dodgeball team — fresh off their gold-medal win at the 2016 Dodgeball World Championships — is now ranked number one in the world.

The Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) told Malay Mail Online that this was the first time that the women’s team has reached the peak of the world standings.

“As of 2016, Malaysian female are ranked #1 in the world after defeating team Canada in the gold medal match 6-5 at the recent World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) 5th World Dodgeball Championships held in Melbourne, Australia,” the association said in a statement cited by the news portal.

The men’s team, meanwhile, is ranked second in the world, after their silver medal performance in the same championships.

The world rankings, according to MAD, are determined through the results of the annual Dodgeball World Championships.

Last Saturday, our girls clinched the gold medal ahead of Canada and the United States.

In the men’s category, Canada won the gold medal while Malaysia won the silver. Australia came in third.

MAD told Malay Mail Online that this year’s result was Malaysia’s best ever performance, surpassing last year’s result where the men’s team won the silver medal while the women’s team brought home the bronze medal.
