Malaysia’s star striker did not die, slams fake media report

On Monday, social media was abuzz with the news that former Malaysian football player Safee Sali has passed away.

The good news is; it was a hoax.

The 32-year-old has slammed the fake newsreport and also voiced his disappointment over the hoax, which was widely spread through social media.

The Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) striker told The New Straits Times that he was informed of the false news by a friend at about 4pm on the same day.

“It is false and I am disappointed this is being spread on Facebook. I am well and will be training as usual at the JDT training centre this evening,” he was quoted as saying.

The hoax was spread through a fake Facebook account called ‘Harian Metro News’ and was widely shared. The fake status claimed that Safee had passed away due to a heart attack:

Meanwhile, Safee told the NST that he will be lodging a police report over the matter soon. 

Known for his powerful strike and clinical finishing, Safee is currently Malaysia’s all-time leading goalscorer in the AFF Championship tournament with nine goals.
