The Komtar building is one of the most iconic buildings in Penang (and maybe the whole of Malaysia), and soon, you’ll get to stand on the edge of it.
If you dare, that is.
The Rainbow Skywalk, a semi-circle glass path that juts several metres out of the building, is set to open on the 68th floor of the building, which is the sixth tallest skyscraper in Malaysia.
Located more than a quarter of a kilometer off the ground, the Rainbow Skywalk will be the highest skywalk in the country, according to The Star Online.
If you’re wondering if the pathway is safe, don’t worry; it will not break under pressure.
The news portal reported that the glass used to make the skywalk is the same type that was used to make the Grand Canyon Skywalk in America.
The pathway was also reportedly heat-treated, temper-proofed, laminated and tested by Universiti Sains Malaysia via a series of vibration, wind and pendulum tests.
Only World Group (OWG) chief operating officer Datuk Jean Koh told the news portal that the idea to create the skywalk first came about when the team went up to the top and saw the view for the fist time.
“Komtar is the pride of Penangites. It was once the tallest building in South-East Asia.
“When we first went up, the view took our breath away and we instantly started thinking of how we can get people to enjoy their trip to the top,” she was quoted as saying.
However, Koh warned that the attraction is not for the faint-hearted.
“We’ve seen many people who cannot shake off that acrophobic dizziness when they step onto the glass. Some will not even try.
“But many love it. You can lie down and take a selfie with the little buildings below as your background. It is a rare opportunity,” she was further quoted as saying.
The Rainbow Skywalk is tentatively scheduled to open on December 18, so if you’re one of those who are always looking an adrenaline rush, the Rainbow Skywalk is perfect for you.
