Malaysians flood social media to express their joy as Anwar’s 20-year wait to be PM finally ends

For Malaysians, the wait for a new prime minister is finally over as Anwar Ibrahim has been sworn in as the new head of government today

For Anwar, his family and his fans, over 20 years of patience, perseverance and hardship have finally paid off as the top seat is finally within his grasp after his progressive Pakatan Harapan coalition was able to garner the largest number of seats in the 15th general election and he gained the approval of Malaysia’s king, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Riyatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, after several days of meeting with various lawmakers.

The former deputy prime minister, who spent nearly a decade in jail as a political prisoner, has finally won.

Emotions have been running high on the internet, with many tweeting out jubilant messages upon receiving the news they had dreamed about for so many years.

Here’s a sampling of just some of the notable tweets celebrating Anwar’s historic victory:

Meanwhile, Anwar’s daughter, Nurul Izzah, also posted a heartfelt tweet about her father’s premiership

“In life, we can never run away from tribulations. In defeat, we are tested. In victory, we are also tested.”

As for the man himself, Anwar tweeted these pictures from his appointment ceremony.

In the caption he says he will carry out his role “with absolute humility and responsibility“ and “This heavy task that I now bear will be guided by the will and heart of the people along with the team.”
