Malaysians feel politicians are more corrupt than cops

When people trust you less than the police, you might have an image problem.

According to the results of a survey by Transparency International-Malaysia’s (TI-M) Malaysian Corruption Barometer (MCB), Malaysians feel that political parties are more corrupted than even the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

Malaysian political parties overtook the PDRM in terms of the survey’s Perceived Corruption of Key Institutions metric this year. TI-M said the top six institutions perceived to be most affected by corruption this year are almost identical to the ones that made up last year’s list.

“The political parties were perceived to be the most corrupt with 45% of Malaysians believing it to be so, followed by police at 42%. Last year’s Global Corruption Barometer (GCB), police took the top spot,” said TI-M president Datuk Akhbar Satar after releasing the results of the first-ever MCB yesterday, fz.com reports.

Other national institutions perceived to be corrupt include public officials and civil servants (31%) and parliament and the legislature (23%).

Akhbar said last year, 76% of respondents perceived the police as being “extremely corrupt”, with political parties following at 69%.

Another part of the survey shows that Malaysians still believe corruption is a serious problem in the country’s public sector.

Meanwhile, the perception of government effectiveness in fighting corruption has deteriorated, relative to the GCB last year. According to MCB, 38% of Malaysians think that the government is ineffective in fighting corruption compared to GCB at 25%. The percentage has dropped to 13%.
