More than a dozen volunteers created an online memorial to honor those who lost their lives to COVID-19 in Malaysia.
There were 349 individuals named in the virtual memorial and more will be added later. The website went live on Malaysia Day yesterday and compared itself to the National Monument in Kuala Lumpur honoring the lives of those lost in battle.
“In Kuala Lumpur stands the Tugu Negara – the National Monument – dedicated to remembering the 11,000 people who died during World War I, World War II, and the 12-year Malayan Emergency,” the COVID-10 Memorial Malaysia website said. Around 22,000 people have so far died of the coronavirus in the country.
“They are not just numbers. Those who have fallen are brothers, sisters, mothers and daughters, sons and fathers, aunts, grandfathers, friends – dearly beloved individuals. This is to remember them, their names, their faces, their lives,” the website added.
The platform also contains information about when and where each individual died, and what their loved ones remember about them.
All details were sourced from sources like news articles and online submissions. Members of the public may also write in their tributes for publication on the site. People interested in creating a memorial of their loved ones may fill up a form with the relevant information.
Malaysia has recorded 22,355 deaths due to the coronavirus.
