Malaysian woman busted in Indonesia for smuggling syabu in her panties

A Malaysian woman tried to smuggle two packets of syabu, or methampetamine, into Indonesia stashed in her underwear, but was arrested by customs officers at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya.

The drugs, amounting to 720 grammes, were found contained in two plastic packets stitched like a menstrual pad and attached to the inner lining of the woman’s underwear.

The Star Online reports that the 29-year old woman boarded a Cathay Pacificc flight from Hong Kong and was arrested by customs officials upon her arrival in Surabaya at 10.45pm on May 12.

Juanda Customs and Excise Department spokesman Iwan Heriawan said enforcement officers carried out a search on the woman after they suspected something was amiss.

“Security officers conducted an inspection of all items brought in by the woman including the underwear she wore,” he said yesterday.

The suspect owned up during questioning that she was asked to courier the narcotics for someone based in Jakarta.

Heriawan said her claim was substantiated when police detained a Nigerian in Jakarta in connection with the crime.

East Jawa District police spokesman Andi Ludianto said police would continue investigations into the case.

“This is the modus operandi of the distribution network. The individual ordering the drug is in Jakarta but the goods are sent to Surabaya,” he said.
