AI is a permanent presence, whether we embrace it or not.

The introduction of ChatGPT has revolutionized the way people work and learning methods, compelling the Malaysian government to recognize its indispensable role in academia.

According to Minister of Higher Education Mohamed Khaled Nordin, local university students will now have permission to utilize this AI tool.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that students must adhere to the established guidelines laid out by the ministry.

“Even if we were to reject ChatGPT, its existence would persist. The Department of Higher Education has already issued guidelines,” he informed reporters during his visit to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday.

The minister also acknowledged the inescapable nature of ChatGPT but stressed the importance of specifying situations where its usage is appropriate and where it is not.

This is particularly crucial because the tool possesses the ability to autonomously generate academic papers without any input from students.

Drawing attention to a recent incident in the United States, where two lawyers employed ChatGPT to include fabricated legal cases in a court filing, the minister stated, “When we consider the incident in the United States, we realize the potential of ChatGPT. It referenced nonexistent cases.”

Hence, determining the suitable circumstances for its utilization and vice versa necessitates the establishment of comprehensive guidelines.

In March of this year, the Ministry of Higher Education had already announced its undertaking to develop guidelines on the utilization of these AI-powered tools.
