Malaysian teen’s tweet about dating goes globally viral, we ask her ‘what’s it like to date these days?’

Adila Husni, a Malaysian teenager from Kuala Lumpur, reached global levels of fame last week when her casual, and hilarious, tweet in anticipation for Valentine’s Day went viral.

We here at Coconuts KL knew this tweet had to be homegrown: We recognized the bin and bin liner from a mile away.

Just how viral did Adila’s tweet go? It got enough likes and retweets that the most woke youth publication, Teen Vogue, took note, and featured it on their digital site.

However, to be truly considered a phenom in this day and age of dime-a-dozen memes, one must pass muster with internet fodder purveyor, best of memes aggregator, and quiz master of what bread best suits your personality — the one and only Buzzfeed.

Adila’s tweet made it to their list of 18 Tweets from this Week that are F*cking Hilarious, and which is kind of a big deal for a kid from Subang, still trying to study for exams.

How is the yoof these days? We have no idea — so we asked Adila what it’s like to be internet-famous, in a good way, and also — is everyone actually garbage?

What’s your name, where are you from, and what do you do?

My name is Adila, I’m from Subang Jaya, Selangor. Currently, I’m a student in my third semester of foundation studies (post-high school, pre-college degree).

Is this the first time that you’ve been retweeted like this?

Yes. Before, I’ve had a few tweets that garnered some attention — but not to this extent. Previously, the best of my tweets would reach a hundred or so retweets, and those were very rare. I was surprised when this tweet gained a thousand retweets a few hours after posting it. Imagine what I felt like when it reached more than 35,000 retweets and 100,000 likes! I was overwhelmed and partly embarrassed, but I’m glad so many people understood my joke.

What’s it like dating as a teen in 2018? Is there a lot of garbage?
Nowadays, most teens feel pressured into dating, almost as if being single is a shameful thing. This leads to girls/boys just jumping head first into relationships, expecting rainbows and butterflies, but only to be met with disappointment. This includes me!

I’ve seen too many Instagram posts and watched too many dramas happen over relationships. I’ve learned (not from experience, thankfully) that rushing into things will probably lead to being unhappy, and then comes the “garbage.” Or at least, this is what I tell myself when I feel lonely, hahaha.

What are the best responses that you’ve gotten to your tweet?

There were a lot of humorous responses, like “Hey he looks a lot like my boyfriend!” and “Are you dating John Cena? Because I can’t see him.”

One especially funny response stood out. Someone captioned my tweet with —  “Now you look cute together” and attached was the same picture I posted, but with the dustbin photoshopped onto my head!

Although some found it offensive that a dustbin was put on my head, I took the response in a light manner and many found it funny too.

Also, I received other pleasant comments like “Queen!”, “I feel you, girl!” and “This tweet is made my day!”, which made me feel good. So they were greatly appreciated too.

That’s so awesome. What would you say is the most important quality in a partner?

A few months back, I would’ve answered “tall, rich, good looking” in an instant, but recently I’ve realized that the most important quality in a partner is for them to be accepting and supportive.

A partner who accepts you for who you are while also supporting you to become a better person, that’s who you should date. Also, there’s nothing wrong in still wanting a tall, rich and good looking partner.

Coconuts KL approves of all supportive, and accepting partners. Say no to garbage!
