Malaysian student transferred RM15,000 a day to secret bank accounts

Always save some money for rainy days, right?

Christine Jiaxin Lee, a Malaysian student who was recently arrested at Sydney Airport for spending RM13.8mil that didn’t belong to her, may have reportedly transferred A$5,000 (RM15,000) a day to secret bank accounts around Australia.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the 22-year-old had secretly moved a total of A$1.3mil (RM3.9mil) by siphoning A$33,000 (RM99,000) a week into private accounts at banks not related to Westpac, the banking institution which mistakenly gave her a A$4.6mil (RM13.8mil) unlimited overdraft four years ago.

The transfers were small enough to avoid raising red flags among bankers, but her lavish lifestyle – which include an epic A$1mil shopping spree and a A$85,000 (RM255,000) a-week-stay at a luxury penthouse in Sydney – caught the attention of Sydney authorities.

The news site also reported that a significant portion of the missing money, totalling up to A$3.3mil (RM9.9mil), may have been moved overseas or already spent, presumably not on a Jacob & Co. diamond ring.

Christine is expected to appear before court sometime in June.
