Malaysian spends birthday – by cycling to China!

David Wu recently turned 49, and he reckons there’s no better way to celebrate his birthday by cycling 4,000km to China!

If you’re wondering why this man decides to subsitute a good ol’ glass of whiskey for dirt and dust on his birthday, he’s on a noble mission: he wants to raise money to help repair homes for the needy.

The businessman, who initiated ‘Project Wumah 2’ (Wu is his family name, by the way) last year, told The New Straits Times that he took up the challenge to inspire individuals to help those in need.

“The journey will be tough and challenging but I think that I will be able to complete it,” David said.

So far, Malaysians have been responding very well to his mission, he said, with a good samaritan pledging to donate RM10,000 to his project.

The journey to China will take at least 12 weeks, crossing Thailand, Laos and Vietnam before reaching the Guang Dong province in China.

He won’t be alone, though; the father of two will be joined by five other cyclists including 69-year-old local celeb Patrick Teoh and 56-year-old seasoned cyclist Dave Eng.

Last year, David raised more than RM100,000 after he walked more than 600km from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Baru under ‘Projek Wumah’ to help repair flood-affected homes in Rantau Panjang.
