Malaysian singer claims that he is a descendant of a 17th century Sultan

Could Malaysian singer Awie be of royal blood? Well, he recently claimed so.

According to a report by Kosmo!, translated by The Star Online, the Wings frontman claimed that he is a descendant of Sultan Sulaiman Shah of the 17th century Singora Sultanate (present day Songkhla) in southern Thailand.

The singer made the revelation after receiving heavy criticism for tying knot with his third wife Sharifah Ladyana Syed Shamsuddin at Masjid Sultan Sulaiman in Songkhla on October 7.

The 48-year-old told the Malay daily that he decided to marry abroad as a mark of respect for his ancestors because the mosque in Songkhla was reportedly named after his forefather.

Umm, okay.

Responding to the criticisms, Awie — whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman — told Kosmo! that he had the right to marry whoever and wherever he wished, as long as it was solemnised in accordance with Islamic teachings.

“Many men marry there (in Thailand) but why am I being criticised so badly?” he was quoted as saying.
