Malaysian runner breaks Guinness World Record for fastest marathon in traditional baju – no fashion show needed!

On Sunday, 23 April, Malaysian marathon runner Mohd Syahidan Alias made history by completing the 2023 TCS London Marathon in full traditional baju Melayu, earning himself a Guinness World Record.

Edan Syah, as he is commonly known, took to Instagram the following day, 24 April, to share his joy at achieving this feat on the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

In his Instagram post, Edan expressed his satisfaction with his performance, saying, “Mission accomplished! We achieved the mission in under three hours as the Guinness World Record holder for ‘Fastest Full Marathon (42.2km) in Traditional Malay Dress (Male)’ with a time of two hours, 49 minutes, and 22 seconds!”

This was not the first time that Edan had achieved a Guinness World Record. In 2019, he completed the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival in Australia wearing a Jalur Gemilang costume in a record time of two hours and 54 minutes.

The runner’s baju Melayu was custom-made and designed by a Kuala Lumpur-based boutique, Bulan Bintang, specifically for his record attempt. Edan expressed his gratitude to the boutique on his Instagram account.

In addition to his Guinness World Record achievement, Edan also raised almost RM10,000 for a disability charity, Livability UK, through his running campaign. He thanked his supporters for their contribution and encouragement in another Instagram post.

Malaysians have been quick to congratulate Edan on his accomplishment and commend him for his impressive achievement.
