There are lots of people who say what Katy Perry does for a living is unholy, but Muslims the world over are zeroing in on one particular incident.
Muslims in Malaysia and the world over are converging on a petition protesting the visuals contained in Perry’s new Egyptian-themed music video for her single ‘Dark Horse’, in which the US pop star, in character as a Pharaoh, magically disintegrates a would-be suitor who is wearing a pendant inscribed with the Arabic word “Allah”.
The depiction led Shazad Iqbal of Bradford, UK to start an online petition seeking to remove the music video from YouTube. The online petition has received more than 60,000 signatures from across the globe, including from Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Lebanon and the US.
The music video was uploaded onto YouTube on February 20, and has since garnered more than 36 million views.
In response, the ‘Dark Horse’ music video has been replaced with a nearly-identical one with only the offending “Allah” pendant digitally removed. Following the move, Shazad Iqbal closed his online petition.
