Malaysian medical student set to become the country’s youngest doctor at 19

Nineteen-year old Chan Hao Shan is set to become Malaysia’s youngest doctor when she graduates from her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Taylor’s University next year. Doogie Howser (before Neil Patrick Harris was on How I Met Your Mother, he played a teen doctor on the show) may have ended its run in 1993, but the spirit is alive and well in KL.

Chan’s interest in medical studies occurred after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 8 years old. She began reading more about the human body and its organs.

“I was curious with the functions of a human body. For instance, I was curious about what really happens in the throat when humans swallow something,” she told Sin Chew Daily.

Let it be on the record that at 8 years old, most of us are still trying to dig holes in the garden to see if we can get to “the center of the Earth.” No? Maybe it was just me.

She accelerated through school, taking 2 month to finish both the Form 1 and Form 2 syllabus, 2 months doing Form 3 and O Levels. She finished all of secondary school in just a year.

She explains that she often felt bored in class, and progress was often too slow, as there was a lot of repetition. In a few days working alone, she could finish an entire textbook.

And there you have, a story that will both warm your hearts, and remind you of all the time you wasted in class talking about your tamagochi.
