Malaysian golfers on the verge of qualifying for the Olympics

When it comes to the Olympics, the spotlight is almost always on athletes from ‘glamour’ sports such as badminton and diving. This year though, we have three athletes from a different sport that are hoping to make the country proud at the Games.

According to a report by theSun, three Malaysian golfers are just a whisker away from qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.

Malaysian golf team manager Vincent Wong told the daily that Kelly Tan, Michelle Koh and veteran Danny Chia have almost assured their places based on their top 60 placings in the latest Olympic Golf Ranking.

Danny is currently ranked 47 in the men’s qualifying ranking, while Kelly is ranked 39 and Michelle, 55.

The top 15 men and women in the rankings will automatically qualify for the Olympic Games, while the remaining 45 spots will go to the highest-ranked players from countries that do not already have two golfers qualified.

“We have another tournament for the men and two more tournaments for our ladies. I’m confident if Gavin Kyle Green showcases good results at the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (in Taiwan) starting today, he will have a better chance to seal a spot in the Rio Olympics,” Vincent was quoted as saying.

The last time golf was an Olympic event was in the 1904 Summer Olympics, so when Danny, Kelly and Michelle officially qualify for the Games, they will be Malaysia’s first ever golfers at the world’s biggest sporting event.

Let’s go, guys!
