In a bizarre incident that has left the community of Bintulu, Sarawak in shock, a family of five is accused of pulling off an audacious hotpot buffet heist. The family allegedly ordered a staggering 600 plates of meat at the Husky Group Bintulu restaurant before discreetly packing the majority of it to take home with them.
The eyebrow-raising episode unfolded recently, sending shockwaves through the small town, where residents often recognize one another. The incident has now gone viral, drawing both ridicule and indignation from netizens and the owner of the buffet restaurant.
According to the restaurant owner, who expressed his frustration on Facebook on Oct. 10, the family’s “unscrupulous consumer behavior” was both shocking and disappointing. He revealed that the bill for the family’s feast amounted to RM163.30 (US$34.50), raising questions about how they managed to consume such an enormous quantity of meat.
The owner shared a photo of the family in question, which included at least two children, and questioned their actions, particularly the act of stealing food in the presence of their own kids. He wrote, “It’s difficult for me to swallow this, so I have to tell everyone about it. I really can’t accept stealing (while with) your children. They ordered 600 plates of meat from the beginning. What they were doing was clearly premeditated.”
The incident has left many puzzled about how such a significant number of orders were served and why the restaurant’s staff did not intervene as the diners packed most of it away. It is yet to be ascertained whether the family employed any special tactics or distractions to execute their daring meat heist.
The owner’s Facebook post has ignited a heated discussion about ethics and decency in public dining establishments. His post resonated with locals, who expressed their disappointment in the family’s behavior, particularly in a time when many businesses are struggling due to economic challenges.
Addressing the cost of running a business in recent times, the owner lamented, “My hotpot can be eaten in the store. But don’t pack the ingredients secretly and take them away!”
The incident, while leaving a sour taste in the mouths of the local community, has also raised questions about restaurant policies and surveillance measures. It serves as a stark reminder that even in close-knit communities, unexpected and audacious acts can still take place, leaving a trail of disbelief and resentment in their wake.
The identities of the family involved remain undisclosed, as the owner has chosen not to reveal their names publicly, emphasizing the community’s tight-knit nature in Bintulu.
