Malaysian divers Pandelela, Jun Hoong get pension for life

Moral of the story, kids – it pays to become a world-class athlete.

Malaysian divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong, who won Malaysia’s first medal at the ongoing Olympic Games, will share a RM300,000 cash incentive and will receive a RM3,000 monthly pension for life, Bernama reports.

The duo bagged the silver medal in the women’s 10m platform synchronised diving event, losing only to China’s Chen Ruolin-Liu Huixia. Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito-Roseline Filion clinched the bronze medal.

Under the special Olympics National Sports Council incentive scheme, a gold medal winner will receive a RM1 million bonus and a monthly pension of RM5,000 while a silver medallist will get a RM300,000 bonus plus a RM3,000 pension. A bronze medal winner will receive RM100,000 plus a RM2,000 monthly pension.

NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail told the news agency that Pandelela and Jun Hoong will share the RM300,000 incentive and the monthly pension, which starts immediately.
