Malaysian couple and photographer stage wedding photos inside active volcano crater

Danny Ong and Krystle Tee, a Malaysian couple, along with their intrepid photographer, Keow Wee Loong, recently ventured deep into the craters of Indonesia’s Ijen volcano complex to shoot their wedding pictures, and the results have gone viral, getting picked up in (the probably confused) English tabloid press.

What better setting to pledge your undying love and commitment to each other than with the smoke and smolder of a dystopian backdrop that last erupted in 1999? It’s apocalyptic, but also romantic.

The couple had to don gas masks in some of the photos, as their proximity to the noxious fumes at times required the extra protection.

While the blue flames and jagged rocks look absolutely terrifying, all parties are happy to report that the only real casualty was the bride’s dress, which, unsurprisingly, had to be retired after the five-hour shoot.

The hike itself into the crater’s 20 kilometer-wide complex took three hours, and there was a fair amount of subterfuge employed to avoid volcano rangers who would have promptly asked them what in the world they were doing, and also to get down now please.

The site has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction, after the blue flames, which are ignited sulphuric gas, emanating from the crater were featured in National Geographic. They can reach as high as five meters.

The temperature of said flames? Six hundred degrees Celsius.

Right. These are really cool, but I think we’ll just stick to wistful glances across the gardens in Putrajaya, thanks!

Oh, and congrats you legitimately crazy kids!

While some volcanoes are making wedding dreams come true, Bali’s Mt. Agung is breaking the hearts of soon-to-be-wedded couples with its recent eruption. You can check out Coconuts Bali’s Agung tales here.
