Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today that he will advise Malaysia’s King to allow parliament to reconvene towards the end of this month.
In a statement issued through the prime minister’s office, Muhyiddin said that he will tell Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to call for a five-day sitting from July 26 to 29 for the lower parliament house, or Dewan Rakyat, and a three-day sitting from Aug 3 to 5, for the upper house, or Dewan Negara.
“The purpose of this sitting is to explain the national recovery plan to MPs and to amend all relevant legislation and rules to allow for Parliament proceedings to be held in a hybrid manner,” the statement said.
“Based on Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution, emergency proclamations and ordinances proclaimed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall be laid before both houses of Parliament,” it added.
Proceedings will be held in compliance with COVID-19 protocols set by the Health Ministry and the National Security Council.
Last week, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim said that the King wanted Parliament to reconvene before August.
The King previously decreed for parliament to resume as soon as possible – without specifying a date – to allow for the emergency ordinances and national recovery plan to be debated by parliamentarians. He gave his order after granting separate audiences to nearly 20 political party leaders over the past month.
Malaysia hasn’t had parliamentary sittings since last December.
