Malaysia clamps down on pornographic Twitter accounts

Twitter may be a great platform for people to express their views and debate with other users – but if you dive deeper, you’ll find the “dark side” of Twitter where anonymous accounts post explicit or offensive content, and then there’s also private accounts that work in an OnlyFans-style where you have to pay to get content.

What kind of content? Usually, it’s erotic and pornographic content.

Sometimes, you’ll find that it is a community of people who know each other and even created erotic content together.

One can only speculate why they do what they do and perhaps the need to express themselves in a society that punishes pleasure may be at the center of it all.

However, they might now be exposed and possibly arrested.

The Dewan Rakyat was informed yesterday that reports of pornographic tweets coming from “dark side” Twitter accounts are being forwarded to the police for additional action.

Teo Nie Ching, the deputy minister of communications and digital media, disclosed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had received a startling 1,282 complaints in this regard between 2022 and February of this year.

“MCMC has taken action against all these complaints, including referring them to police for their attention,” she said during her ministry’s Budget 2023 winding-up speech at the committee stage.

“Any further action will be under police jurisdiction.”

Teo added MCMC has also reported 222 Twitter accounts that were found to have uploaded lewd content to the platform provider, and noted that these accounts have since been permanently taken down.

She was responding to questions raised by MPs during their debates earlier pertaining to the growing number of “dark side” accounts on Twitter.

It was reported previously that the matter has been under police attention since 2020.
