Malaysia bags third Commonwealth gold with badminton win

Tee Jing Yi’s winning shot in the the mixed team badminton final against England today secured another gold for Malaysia, making it the third gold medal the country has won at the Commonwealth Games so far.

Upon delivering the winning point, the rest of the national badminton team flocked down to the court and “jumped and danced in sheer joy”, The Star Online reported.

Jing Yi, ranked 42 places higher than Sara Walker, beat the English player by 21-16, 21-17, helping Malaysia defend its mixed team title.

“I am so happy that I clinched the winning point,” Jing Yi said. “I got nervous when she tried to catch up in the second game. Fortunately, I stayed focused. I kept telling myself to keep my emotions in check.”

All the shuttlers had donned black armbands to remember the victims of the MH17 plane crash.

The Malaysian team’s solid performance so far raises high hopes for more medals when the individual events commence Tuesday.
