A condominium complex in Shah Alam has adopted the unorthodox policy of barring all foreigners from renting units there, in the interests of avoiding “culture clashes” with the building’s mostly Malay tenants.
Seksyen 22’s Alam Prima condominiums recently put up a banner in its front foyer saying, “FOREIGNER you are NOT WELCOME to stay HERE …!”, along with “Komuniti Alam Prima ‘BANTAH’ kewujudan ASRAMA/HOSTEL” (“The Alam Prima community objects to dormitory/hostel units”).
The Malay Mail Online‘s Aizyl Azlee was told by a committee member of the condominium’s joint-management body that the ban on foreigners was indeed an official policy of the residential complex.
“It has been in the house rules since 2012,” said Norhayaty Ariffin, the JMB committee member.
“So far there have been no complaints by residents at any of the AGMs (annual general meeting). This matter has never been raised, which means the residents here agree with the policy.”
Under Alam Prima’s policy foreigners are, however, free to visit the condominiums, but tenancy agreements are strictly vetted by management to ensure no units are rented to non-Malaysians.
Norhayaty explained that the policy was in place to avoid instances of “culture clash” between foreigners and Alam Prima’s 98% Malay residents.
The condominium’s JMB also imposes a ban on using any condo units as dorms or hostels.
