Malacca old folks home ordered to shut after video of alleged abuse went viral

You know, there is a special place in hell for people like these.

A video purportedly showing a man slapping an elderly woman at an old folks home in Malacca has gone viral on social media.

The alleged abuse came to light when a Facebook user uploaded a short 10-second video onto his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In the video, a man, believed to be a caretaker at the All Mighty Old Folks Home located in Glebang, can be seen slapping the defenseless woman on her head numerous times.

The elderly woman can also be seen sobbing on the floor throughout the whole ordeal as she tried to shield herself from the man’s slaps.

The video has since made its rounds on the social media page — it has more than 4.2 million views to date — with many Netizens expressing disbelief and anger over the alleged abuse:

On Tuesday, a former staff member at the old folks home lodged a police report against the 56-year-old caretaker at the Batang Tiga police station.

The 29-year-old woman claimed in her report that caretaker would often hit the elderly at the home.

On Thursday, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron issued a directive to shut down the old folks home for a week pending investigation.

According to The Star Online, State Welfare Department and Malacca Hospital representatives reportedly arrived at the home at about 3pm to relocate 17 of its occupants.

Women, Family Development and Family exco Datuk Latipah Omar told the news portal that the occupants will be temporarily housed at a Government-managed old folks home in Cheng.

“We are also in the midst of locating family members of some of the home’s occupants to notify them that their elders have been relocated,” she was quoted as saying.

The news portal also reported that the police have arrested the caretaker earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, the elderly woman in the video had reportedly returned home to her family on Thursday morning.
