A major fire destroyed an illegal fuel depot as well as a three-tonne tanker at Durian Burung in Alor Setar on Sunday.
State Fire and Rescue Department station chief Supt Mohd Hafizi Hassan told The Star Online that the department received an emergency call at 9pm and 20 firemen reached the scene 26 minutes later.
“When we reached there, three tanks with 20,000 litres to 30,000 litres of fuel were on fire.
“A tanker and a lorry were also destroyed,” he was quoted as saying.
Supt Mohd Hafizi added that the rescue operations were hindered as there weren’t any hydrant nearby.
“Foam had to be used to put out the fire.
“The blaze was brought under control at about 9.45pm. Nobody was injured,” he told the news portal.
According to 42-year-old Loh Chin Seong, a member of the Taman Mutiara Mergong Voluntary Fire Fighting Squad, the fire was believed to have started from the tanker, which was reportedly in the midst of unloading petrol into one of the fuel tanks in the illegal fuel storage facility.
