Mahathir Mohamad has been named one of the world’s “most dangerous extremists” by New York-based nonprofit Counter Extremism Project.
The 95-year-old was placed on the 14th spot along with others such as Secretary-General of the terrorist group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah from Lebanon and Buddhist monk Ashin Wirathu from Myanmar.
Even though he is not directly responsible for specific violent events, the organization said that the former Malaysian prime minister’s controversial opinions have led to “international condemnation.”
Mahathir had amid an outbreak of violence in France in October claimed that Muslims have the “right to be angry and to kill” the French, sparking online backlash.
This is the first time the organization, which also has headquarters in Berlin and London, has released such a list. Counter Extremism Project claims that it is an organization that strives to combat global extremism through policy changes and regulations.
