Barcelona striker, former Liverpool golden-boy, man of insatiable thirst for human flesh, and a human behind a thousand nuanced reactions to Malaysian food, is hard at work continuing his campaign to promote Malaysia abroad, and to his nearly 14 million Twitter followers.
This holiday period, he wants everyone to know that he’s hard at work experiencing all the Malaysian culture he can to share with the rest of the world. He’s also been learning “some basic Malaysian words.”
His tweet then ended with wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year.
Unfortunately, the corresponding photo he chose to share was a picture of him in front of Batu Caves, with the caption of “Vanakkam” (a welcome greeting, in Tamil).
One of Kuala Lumpur’s most famous sightseeing spots, symbolically speaking, Batu Caves really has not much to do with Chinese New Year. Best known for being one of the most famous Hindu shrines outside of India, it’s most often associated with being the focal point come Thaipussam, and is dedicated to Lord Muruga.
Social media users were quick to point out the incongruent photo, and suggested that this picture, of Suarez in Penang, might be a bit more apropos.
Real talk, Luis: Does your social media manager not have access to Google? Do you need help, because at this point we’re willing to sort out your Malaysia tweets free, as a service to our country.
Otherwise, we’re beginning to worry that, like your time at Liverpool, your heart just isn’t into it, and you’re going through the motions, but without any emoción.
If that’s the case, just say it, Luis. We get it. We’re not fun like the Philippines, or beach-sexy like Thailand, but we have feelings too.
Gong Xi Fa Cai, amigo.
