Now that‘s a lot of ong.
A local collector shelled out RM76,000 for a mint-condition RM100 bank note with the serial number AA8888888 at an auction in Bank Negara.
MNP Auctioneers (Central) Sdn Bhd managing director Stephen Soon, who oversaw the auction held yesterday, told The Star Online‘s L Suganya, “In Malaysia, twin prefixes and solid numbers are the most popular among collectors.”
In Chinese, the number 8 is pronounced the same way as the word for “prosperity”, making it a popular choice for license plate and addresses.
Apart from paying 760 times the paper value of the bank note, the collector and anyone similarly inclined had to pay a RM300 registration fee to enter a bid at yesterday’s auction.
16 other bank notes were auctioned off at Bank Negara’s event.
“People often think that bank notes with these types of unique numbers can only be obtained under the table, but through this auction anyone can bid for them,” Soon said.
