Open your heart, open your mind, and open your refrigerator. That’s what one restaurant owner in Butterworth, Penang has done.

The owner of a chicken rice chain could not help but notice that there was a large amount of homeless men and women coming to his restaurant’s back alley looking for leftovers at the end of the day.

The business man, who told the China Press he wanted to remain nameless, knew that he had to do his part. He rented a fridge, and put packaged sandwiches, cakes and drink inside. He left it a few feet away from Layer Gene Café at Raja Uda in Butterworth. He stocks the fridge, and Layer Gene pays the electricity bill.

One of his employees Wu Ri Jai, said that the response has been overwhelming, with many poor, elderly using the food bank. They hope to increase the project’s profile, and encourage the public to donate fresh food to add variety. Wu has stated that all food in the fridge is halal, to cater to some Malaysians dietary restrictions, and that it is always fresh.

It’s open from 8:30am to 11pm. Says Wu, “we do not stop anyone from taking food or drinks from the refrigerator.”

Incredible. A million hearts to all of you that are part of this. You make our world a better place.
