In a shocking turn of events on the evening of May 9, an astonishing incident took place on the streets of Langkawi. A Toyota Vios, driven by a pair of pint-sized adventurers, careened into a lamp post after a brief joyride.

The astonishing part? The “drivers” were a six-year-old and his three-year-old sibling.

The incident came to light through social media posts, which detailed the unbelievable scene witnessed by startled onlookers.

Witnesses reported seeing the six-year-old at the steering wheel while the three-year-old managed to reach the accelerator pedal, sending the vehicle hurtling down Jalan Bukit Tangga in Kampung Titi Chanwang at approximately 11:15pm.

Concerned motorists, initially assuming that an intoxicated driver was behind the wheel, pursued the vehicle. However, their pursuit quickly took a surprising turn when they discovered that the young children were the ones in control of the car following the crash.

“Where is the driver?” the men were heard asking in disbelief in a 95-second video that was widely circulated on Facebook just after midnight.

In another video, the boys, both in red shirts, can be seen sitting inside the car while telling the men that they wanted to go to a nearby shop to buy a toy.

“We are going to the shop. Mama is at home,” said the older boy, while his brother replied, “We want to buy a black car.”

Upon receiving an alert about the accident, the Langkawi police swiftly responded to the scene.

Langkawi police chief ACP Shariman Ashari confirmed that the older boy sustained a cut to his chin during the chaotic escapade, while his younger brother emerged unharmed. The front end of the car bore significant damage as a result of the collision.

“The crash occurred when the car travelling from Ulu Melaka towards Kampung Nyior Chabang lost control and crashed into a lamp post near Kampung Titi Chanwang,” he said in a statement last night.

“The driver is a minor aged six, who was driving a passenger, his brother, aged three.

“Based on investigations, the boy from Kampung Padang Mengkuang was driving the car without his parents’ knowledge before it crashed by the roadside in Jalan Bukit Tangga.

“Their father was asleep while their mother had gone into the toilet when the boys snuck out of the house and drove the car,” he added.

Astoundingly, the determined duo had managed to drive a remarkable distance of approximately 2.5 kilometers away from their home before losing control of the vehicle. This astonishing feat further accentuates the gravity of the situation.

Authorities have taken immediate action, classifying the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to reckless driving.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and proper supervision, particularly when it comes to ensuring the safety of young children.
