‘Lepak, ‘Teh tarik’ now in Oxford English Dictionary

And they said nothing good came out of our education system. Pfftt!

According to a report by Singapore’s Straits Times, several distinctly Malaysian and Singaporean slang words are now recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary, including the terms ‘lepak’ and ‘teh tarik’.

In its March 2016 update, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has also added several words borrowed from Chinese and Malay languages which are used mainly by Malaysians and Singaporeans. These words include ‘shiok’ (another way to say ‘great’), ‘blur’ (a word to define an individual who is slow in understanding something) and ‘sabo’ (prank).

The phrase ‘ang moh’ (a term to define a Caucasian) and ‘sotong’ (a word popularly used to define a person that’s clumsy and stupid) also made it into the dictionary.

Oh, and the word ‘wah’, too, made it into the list of 19 words that were added into the OED.

What’s next, ‘RM2.6bil’?
