Lee Chong Wei will consider playing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – but on one condition!

When Dato’ Lee Chong Wei bowed out of the Rio Olympics with a silver medal around his neck, one might think that he will retire from the Games for good, just like Olympic legends Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps.

Not so fast, he said.

The Malaysian badminton legend told The Star Online that he might (keyword: might) take part in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 if the Badminton World Federation (BWF) changes the current 21-point best-of-three to the old 11-point best-of-five format.

The world number one, who will turn 34 in October, added that the shorter and faster format would enable him to extend his career.

“Nothing is confirmed yet, but if there is indeed a change I could very well compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Even Lin Dan might play on as the 11-point system would mean shorter matches, which is better for senior players like us.

“We certainly have the experience. Playing in shorter matches is definitely better because I believe we can control the shuttlecock better,” he was quoted as saying.

To be honest, the idea of him playing in the Tokyo Olympic Games four years from now seems a little far-fetched at the moment, but the Rio Olympic Games silver medalist, however, hinted that he wants to play in the Thomas Cup tournament in 2018.

“I’m still in good physical condition and I have no issues training under Hendrawan and (Tey) Seu Bock as I prepare for the World Championships next year,” said Chong Wei.

“I still have lots to learn from Hendrawan, who is a former world champion himself.

“Beyond that, if my condition is still good, I don’t see why I can’t represent Malaysia for one more Thomas Cup,” he told the news portal.
