Lee Chong Wei: It wasn’t Rosmah who gave me the tainted cordyceps

National badminton hero Lee Chong Wei has denied speculation that the “wife of a very influential man in Malaysia” who gave him the tainted health supplements that led to his worldwide professional ban was Rosmah Mansor, wife of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, the former world #1 asserted that Rosmah did not supply him with cordyceps capsules in unmarked containers, which were later found to have had traces of the banned anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone.

He however continued to refuse to name the person who did pass him the supplements.

“Yes. I can confirm it is not her. However, I am not at liberty to reveal the name of the person (who gave him the tablets),” he said.

The Malaysian Insider quotes the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) 12-page ruling on Lee’s case as stating, “How the contamination occurred is not known for sure, but most likely it occurred during the process of grinding the raw cordyceps into powder and putting this powdered cordyceps into the gelatin capsules in the shop in Kuala Lumpur.”

Lee will once again be able to compete professionally beginning tomorrow, after a retroactive 8-month ban imposed by the BWF for failing a doping test at the World Championships in Copenhagen last August.

His urine sample taken in Copenhagen showed that he had traces of the non-performance enhancer dexamethasone in his system.
