Lee Chong Wei banned 8 months for doping violation, can compete again starting May 1

The verdict is in: the world’s governing body on badminton has ruled that national shuttle legend Lee Chong Wei did indeed commit a doping violation, and has slapped him with an eight-month ban from competing professionally.

Still, it’s hard to feel too sorry for the former world #1, as the ban was retroactively set by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to start on August 30, 2014 – meaning LCW can start competing again from May 1 onwards.

Astro Awani reports that Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is excited at the prospect of LCW stepping onto the court to represent Malaysia at the Sudirman Cup tourney beginning on May 10, the Singapore SEA Games in June, and the World Championships in Jakarta this coming August.

On November 11, 2014, Lee was temporarily suspended when he failed a doping test at the World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark in August. He appealed to have a second urine test, but failed that one as well.
