At least 15,500 Malaysians turned up for Bersih 5 rally, say the police

More than 15,500 Malaysians turned up for the Bersih 5 rally held at the Kuala Lumpur city center on Saturday.

The number was based on police estimate, according to City police chief Datuk Amar Singh.

Amar told The New Straits Times that a majority of the protesters gathered at the Bangsar LRT station, Masjid Negara, Jalan Tun Perak, Dataran Maybank and Sogo shopping center before making their way to Dataran Merdeka.

As for the Red Shirts, approximately 2,500 members showed up at the rally.

Amar told the daily that the Red Shirts had gathered near the Putra World Trade Centre, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Raja Laut and Sogo before the police diverted their path to the Padang Merbok.

The protesters reportedly dispersed by 6pm.

The Bersih 5 rally, said Amar, went on without a hitch, although the police received a total of 28 reports over various offences.

The turnout, however, was a far cry from the previous Bersih 4 rally which took place last year, where a reported 500,000 people took to the streets of KL to call for a reform of the current electoral system.
