Massive tidal waves smashed into walls at popular tourist spots in Penang yesterday, flooding the roads as strong winds drew waves higher than lamp posts.
The Star Online reports that the large walls of water smashed into the Esplanade and Gurney Drive as passers-by recorded the incident on their devices.
According to the report, strong west-southerly winds had caused the waves to become that high.
The Star Online quotes a worker at the Esplanade S. Prakash who said he had never seen waves this big in his five years working for the Penang Municipal Council.
“I panicked when I saw how high they were,” Prakash, who slipped and fell after one of the waves hit, told the daily.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department reportedly said that strong winds over Thailand resulted in massive waves as high as 3.5 metres over the waters off Perlis, Kedah, Penang.
