After announcing a 150% increase in parking charges, Kuala Lumpur authorities now want to re-categorise areas currently listed as part of the city’s central business district (CBD).
The new parking charges — which came into effect on July 16 — were set to be imposed in all CBD areas, including places like Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Sri Hartamas, Kepong and Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI).
Now, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor says these zones, largely considered residential areas, would have to be re-evaluated to see if it should come under the CBD list, Bernama reports.
“In the previous city structure plan, the areas were defined as CBD areas… that was our mistake and we need to rectify it,” he reportedly said.
“As such, we will listen to the people and make the changes because to my understanding the areas are not within the CBD,” Tengku Adnan was quoted as saying.
On Wednesday, TTDI was exempted from the newly-announced parking charges, following a public outcry that resulted in a meeting between Tengku Adnan and the KL City Hall (DBKL).
Bernama reported that new parking rates for areas such as Bukit Bintang and Imbi would remain as they were in fact busy zones.
Three million vehicles enter the city daily, and DBKL runs 46,000 parking lots.
