KLCC bomb scare: Those were not bombs, they were Petrosains science projects

The two items found near Aquaria KLCC — which sparked a bomb scare in the area late yesterday — turned out to be just school science project that were left by a primary school student.

City police chief Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said was quoted as saying in media reports that the glass jars were part of a science project by a group of students who had earlier visited Petrosains in KLCC on a school trip.

“From closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) footage, police found that the group of school students had earlier visited Petrosains in KLCC,” the NST quoted him as saying.

“From investigation, police learnt that each of them were given a jar together with wires, a light bulb and a battery by Petrosains as a science project,” he was quoted further.

Members of the public had reportedly been told to evacuate following reports of the suspicious looking bottles in the area. A police bomb squad was send and later, destroyed both bottles which they suspected had been improvised explosive devices.

“I would like to assure the public that there’s no need to panic, as from our probe, it had been ascertained that the objects were not explosives,” Tajudin added.

Petrosains in a statement today expressed regret over the incident stating that the jars had been part of a learning materials used by primary school students in its Mini Starlab Workshop.

The pupils were allowed to bring home the jars, which were fitted with batteries and LED lights to explain the constellation system, as part of a learning tool and their overall workshop learning experience.”

“Petrosains and its management regard the safety and well-being of its visitors of utmost importance, and assures the public that all safety measures are in place at all times.”
