Cab drivers in the city staged a protest against ride-hailing apps today, causing traffic along Jalan Bukit Bintang to come to a standstill.
A group of taxi drivers had gathered and parked their vehicles near the Fahrenreit 88 shopping mall to protest against Uber and GrabCar.
The Star Online reports that police were present at the protest, speaking with the head of the group at 11.30 while advising the crowd to disperse.
Malaysian Taxi Driver Transformation Association deputy president Kamarudin Mohd Hussainm, who denied being the organiser, was quoted as saying that he, along with three other drivers, had been detained.
A spokesman with the Land Public Transport Commission told The Star Online that they would issue a statement on the matter soon.
On March 22, Indonesia’s taxi drivers staged a similar protest in Jakarta, but things quickly got out of hand.

Reports said that taxi drivers, mostly from the Blue Bird taxi service company, were seen stepping on and smashing two other Blue Bird taxis whose drivers didn’t want to get involved in the protest.
