KL police identify groups offering illegal vehicle ‘escort service’

Several groups reportedly operating illegal ‘vehicle escort’ services in the city have been identified, Kuala Lumpur police said.

Bernama reports that some of these services — which mimic traffic police — are offered for as low as RM300

“Imagine if one trip is charged at RM300. How much can they earn in a day?” city traffic police chief ACP Mohd Nadzri Hussain was quoted as saying.

Five people between the ages of 26 and 38 have reportedly been caught this year.

“There was a case where a suspect was detained while riding a high-powered Honda CBX750 motorcycle, which is similar to the motorcycles being used by the traffic police,” the news agency quoted him as saying, adding that some of them used sirens similar to those used by traffic police on escort duty.

He told Bernama that police were still looking into how these groups get their clients.

“They are behaving like thugs on the road. They stopped cars, blocked the traffic and caused traffic congestion. These groups are not equipped with the knowledge concerning escorting vehicles and (instead) they cause anger to other road users,” he reportedly said.

In May, a ‘Datuk’ businessman’s three ‘outriders’ were arrested after they caused a major traffic crawl on the Connaught Highway by blocking passage to allow their boss’ cars to pass.

According to police the three cars — a BMW, a Proton Inspira and a Bentley— were not registered as government-owned vehicles.
